Week 34
Your baby drops lower, easing rib kicks
Your cantaloupe-sized baby is settling into position, while you might feel every twist and turn (plus some brand-new aches). Here’s what to track, and when to call.

About the size of
a cantaloupe
- Length
- 17.7 in (45 cm)

**About the size of a cantaloupe,** with chubby cheeks forming and sleep cycles emerging.

What to expect
Baby’s head-down (probably). Most settle into position by now. If breech, some providers suggest spinning babies techniques, but there’s still wiggle room.
- Lung party. Surfactant production is in overdrive so those tiny air sacs won’t stick together at birth.
- Sleepy but strong. They nap 90% of the day, but those kicks pack a punch (hello, rib cage).
Your ribs might get a break as baby drops lower. Heartburn? Now’s when propping up your pillow stack pays off. That cantaloupe is crowding everything.
Things to be aware of
Lightning crotch. That sudden zapping sensation in your pelvis? It’s pressure on nerves as baby drops lower. Sitting on a birthing ball or doing cat-cow stretches can help.
- Nonstop hiccups. Common now (their little diaphragm is practicing). But call your provider if they last over 20 minutes, it could signal cord concerns.
- Swollen hands/feet. Normal if mild and even. Elevate those feet. But sudden swelling, especially with headaches? That’s preeclampsia screening time.
False alarms happen. Braxton Hicks get stronger now. If contractions don’t ease with water and rest, or come every 5 minutes for an hour? That’s go-time math.
What might happen
Group B strep test next week (or this one). A quick vaginal/rectal swab around weeks 35–37. If positive, you’ll get IV antibiotics during labor to protect baby.
Birth preferences chat
Many providers want your birth plan reviewed by 36 weeks. Jot down pain relief questions (epidural timing?), delayed cord clamping wishes, or if you want immediate skin-to-skin.
- Pack that hospital bag (include snacks and a long phone charger)
- Tour the birth center if you haven’t yet
