What to expect
Welcome to the second trimester! This marks a major milestone in your pregnancy. Your baby is now about the size of a peach and is growing rapidly. Tiny fingerprints are beginning to form on their fingers, making them even more unique.
Your baby is developing vocal cords
Your baby’s vocal cords are forming this week, though you won’t hear their tiny voice anytime soon. Their facial features are also becoming more defined, with eyes moving closer together and ears settling into their final position.
You might start feeling more energy this week. The fatigue that’s been dragging you down could begin to lift as your body adjusts to the pregnancy hormones. Many people find the second trimester to be the most comfortable phase.
Your uterus is growing to accommodate your baby, and you might notice a slight bump starting to show. That baby bump is a sign of all the incredible work your body is doing to nurture your little one.
Things to be aware of
Your appetite might return with a vengeance. Many people find their nausea easing up around this time, and suddenly they’re hungry, a lot. This is normal, but try to focus on nutrient-dense foods to keep your energy up.
Watch for headaches and dizziness
As your blood volume increases, headaches and dizziness can become more common. Staying hydrated and taking breaks throughout the day can help. If these symptoms feel severe or persistent, it’s worth mentioning to your provider.
You might notice more vaginal discharge. This is your body’s way of keeping the birth canal healthy, but if it’s accompanied by itching, odor, or discomfort, bring it up with your provider.
- Round ligament pain. A sharp tug low in your belly? That’s likely your uterus stretching. It’s normal but can be uncomfortable.
- Skin changes. Some people develop a pregnancy “glow,” while others notice dark patches or acne. Both are normal and temporary.
What might happen
Around this week, you might have your second prenatal appointment. This is a good time to discuss any symptoms you’ve been experiencing and ask questions about what’s to come in the second trimester.
The NT scan
If you opted for the nuchal translucency (NT) scan, it’s typically performed between weeks 11 and 14. This scan checks for chromosomal abnormalities and measures the fluid at the back of your baby’s neck. It’s a quick, non-invasive ultrasound.
You might start thinking about maternity clothes. While some people can still wear their regular clothes, others might find their waistbands feeling snug. Comfort is key as your body continues to change.
- Schedule your next prenatal appointment
- Ask about any lingering symptoms
- Start planning your maternity wardrobe
