When the due date still feels far away: small ways to bond with your baby now

You look at the calendar again, counting weeks on your fingers for what must be the twentieth time. The due date still feels abstract, like a city you’ve only seen on a map. But the baby? That part is real. Right now, tucked under your ribs or just starting to show, they’re already someone.
The baby you can't hold yet is still yours
Pregnancy bonding isn’t all sonogram photos and nursery prep (though those count too). Sometimes it’s the quiet, unremarkable moments, humming a song while you wash dishes, feeling the first tiny flutter during a meeting, imagining their face when you pass a playground.
You don’t need to feel magical about it every day. Some mornings, you’ll forget you’re pregnant until your sweater catches on your belly. Other days, you’ll press a hand to your skin like you’re keeping a secret. Both are normal. Both count.
Small things that make it feel real
- Talk to your bump. Not because it’s a parenting test, because their ears are developing now. Tell them about the rain on the window. Name the dog barking next door. And when you run out of things to say? A grocery list works just fine.
- Wear the thing that makes you feel it. Maybe it’s a stretchy dress that clings to your new shape. Maybe it’s your partner’s oversized sweatshirt. Whatever lets you touch your belly without thinking.
- Keep a note for them. Jot down one line a week, the song you played on repeat, the weird craving you gave into at midnight, how your best friend reacted when you told her. They’ll never care about the punctuation. They’ll care that it’s yours.

The bond isn’t a checklist
No one gets to tell you what counts as bonding, not the apps, not the well-meaning coworker, not even the stack of parenting books by your bed. Connection isn’t a milestone. Sometimes it’s letting yourself cry during a diaper commercial. Sometimes it’s forgetting to 'do the thing' and then realizing you were doing it all along.
There will be days when it feels too early to love someone you’ve never met. There will be days when the love is so fierce it scares you. Most days will be something in between.
However you’re getting through the wait, however you’re marking the time: it’s enough. You’re already becoming the person they’ll reach for in the dark. That much is certain.
